Manitowac WI to Ludington MI

5 Jun

We had a leisurely start this morning in Algoma, with a full breakfast at Southern Comfort on the dock close to our Harbor Inn motel rooms. We followed the shoreline roads as much as we could and had a perfect lunch at The Fat Seagull. I ate a seagull deluxe burger and left with a new blue T-shirt.

The departure of the SS Badger ferry was delayed by about 45 minutes because of the struggles loading 2 over-sized trucks with accompanying pilot vehicles. The largest was 135ft long with three articlulating joints. Even with one joint locked it was a very tight squeeze to back the big rigs into the hold.

The Badger is an old boat built for loading railway cars, and at each dock has to be turned 180 degrees and precisely positioned with the stern locked into the dock like a jigsaw piece. The Captain says “we have fun, especially in strong winds.” It’s the last operating coal-fired steamer with a US flag and isn’t very manoeuvrable.

We ate dinner, as Tim recommended, at the Old Hamlin Inn; good old home style cooking. A fitting place for the four of us to have our last meal together.
We are all staying at the Viking Arms Inn, Jim and Brenda plan to leave early at 7:00am and haul about 450 miles tomorrow to Dayton OH. We plan a more leisurely ride homebound.
