Horizons Unlimited – Ontario Event

11 Sep

It’s all about overland adventure: whether you’re a seasoned veteran with wisdom to share or a complete novice hungry for ideas and guidance, it doesn’t matter if you ride a motorcycle, a bicycle or an expedition vehicle …

The HU Ontario event is taking place from Thursday, Sep 12 to Sunday, Sep 15, 2013 at Camp Manitou, situated on Manitouwabing Lake near McKellar and east of Parry Sound Ontario.

Over the course of the event there’ll be talks, demonstrations, workshops, Q&A’s, challenges and competitions, with many presentations being repeated so you won’t miss out.

As well as hearing inspiring stories of overlanding adventure from around the world, you’ll get the low-down on preparing for your journey, navigation, first-aid, photography, filming and a host of other essential topics. Whatever your past experience or future plans may be, there’s something for everyone.

I’ll be riding up solo from Kingston and hope to post more information and pictures as the weekend unfolds.

I’ve arrived at the camp, and found some new roads on the way.

Susan and Grant are wonderful hosts, who worked through the weekend to make it a success.

The Camp Manitou setting is perfect for us and the staff were great. We were very well fed; complete with late night campmade cookies.

Spacious cabins with ample space for gear, comfortable bunks, toilets and showers.  Hopefully year event will be here again nest year; this was my first HU event and I’ll come back next year.

There were many seminars and presenters who freely shared their knowledge. And a very special thanks to Patrick Trahan who awed us with his powerful story about pursuing his dreams; and entertained us with his sense of humour. “Dreams! Do something about it.”

We endured freezing temperatures Friday night, and woke to a misty morning.

Clinton Smout showed us all a few slow speed techniques. It’s amazing what he can do with a large bike like a GS, and confidently in a crowded area with all of us standing around. I’m not sure that I would want to be as close to anyone else to photograph while riding.  We’ve obviously all got some things to practice.

I would like to master his John Wayne, one-footed, style of mounting and dismounting so that I can get on in some rough terrain when I’m not able to support my loaded Vstrom with its kickstand. I think that I’ll practice on a soft grassy lawn.

    Hi,

I am HU member. I went to my first HU Travelers Event in Stecoah, NC last year. Thinking about coming up to the 2014 HU Ontario event at Camp Manitou.

Can you tell me more about:

    – Weather condition in September? Rain a lot? Temps?
    – Any nice short day loop around area? Would you have a list of destinations for short rides during day?
    – Do most people leave the camp during day and go riding?
    – Are any of the presentations during day or all in evening?
    – For those who tent camp, I assume there is ample common bathrooms and shower facilities?
    – How’s the food and service facilities? Is it buffet style or you place your order? Just curious how the meals work out wit large crowd.

Did most people pitch tent or stay in cabins?

Many thanks and Happy New Year?
